At present there are ten known species of bats in Ireland, namely Leisler's Bat (Nyctalus leisleri), Brandt’s Bat (Myotis brandtii), Daubenton's Bat (Myotis daubentonii), Whiskered Bat (Myotis mystacinus), Natterer's Bat (Myotis nattereri), Nathusius’ Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii), Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), Brown Long-eared Bat (Plecotus auritus) and Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros). 

All bat species and their roosting sites (both summer, maternity and winter hibernation sites) are protected under the Irish Wildlife Act (1976-2000) and Annex IV of the EU Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.
