The simplest and most effective way to protect trees on development sites is to establish and maintain a Root Protection Area (RPA) prior to and during construction works.
However, is some situations (e.g. the demolition of buildings, the removal of existing road surfaces) work within the RPA may be unavoidable. Nonetheless, it may be possible to install certain structures, i.e. ground protection systems close to existing trees without causing unacceptable levels of damage.
These practices may be required in circumstances where underground services close to street trees are at risk due to root damage or where trees are unstable and must be removed.
